Let's talk about dog breeds today!

Updated: Mar 24, 2024

I have been in the pet industry for quite some time. I have always loved animals, ever since I could remember. And in my time, I have seen lots of breeds come around. I want to talk about the mistakes new owners make when adopting a dog.

I know when a dog lover sees a puppy they simply fall in love, I mean face it, who doesn't love a cute mushy face of a basset hound or a pug or any breed of that matter. The fact is puppies are cute, all of them. But the #1 mistake a new owner does is they don't research that cute little puppies breed before just making the decision to take it home. Now I'm not saying every new owner does this but most of them do. Then they find themselves having to pay a lot of money for training or worse, giving the puppy up, and not knowing if he will a good life or not.

"My dog won't stop biting our ankles" This is coming from someone with a heeler or border collie! These dogs are bred for Hearding!

"My dog goes after my cats and smaller pets" This is someone with a Belgian Malinois. This breed of dogs are bred with a high prey drive and to take down anything that moves fast. (Unless trained with a professional)

The fact is when getting a puppy, you have to do your research. Some are fit for an apartment life, and some need a lot of room to run and explore, Some make great pets for all members of the family, some only bond to 1 person. Some are good farm dogs that protect your life stalk and some try to kill your farm animals every chance they get. Some shed a lot and need daily brushing, if you don't have time for that then you need to find a different breed, one that fits your needs and lifestyle. There are so many dogs at the shelter that would make great pets, just do your research before you take that cute little ball of fluff home. Save yourself the time and money and life. It also helps from having to rehome that cute little puppy in the long run when you realize it was too much. Now that poor baby who has known you for the last 7months is being tossed away for something it can't control, but you could have by just doing your homework. Impulse buying will get you into some trouble and could cause a incent puppy his life all because he was so cute when he was a puppy.

So, before you buy that cute little puppy, do your research and see what kind of dog it will be when it's all grown up and make sure you can handle that breed when it's all grown up.

Now I'm not saying a dog can't be trained or taught, the fact of the matter is why force a Hearding dog to live its life in an apartment and not able to do what its bred to do, Herd, just because you want that specific breed. Don't be selfish, be smart.

Reseach, research, research.
